2009 Legislative Update and Call to Action!

Three bills were introduced and heard by the Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee on March 5th.  The bills will be voted on by committee members to decide if they will progress to the next step, “General File”.

In summary the bills: (click on each bill to read the actual bill as it has been introduced).

  1. Add CNMs to the list of providers that cannot be denied hospital priveleges soley based on their credential type.
  2. Remove the written practice agreement requirement to allow for autonomous practice.
  3. Remove the home birth restriction.

This is where your help is needed!  The Committee members need to hear from you, your family members, your nurse-midwifery supporting friends and healthcare professionals.  Along with contacting your senator, please contact the Health and Human Service Committee TODAY!

  1. We need you to contact the HHS committee urging them to vote for the bills. At this point it is also appropriate to thank them for their time at the hearing. You need to write one letter for each bill, and make sure to personally sign the letters. Here is a basic outline you can use as you draft your letters.
  2. We need you to ask every Nebraska voting friends and family members to send letters to the HHS Committee.
  3. Try to make time to attend an M&M day as we wait for the HHS Committe's decisions on these bills. You can find the dates on our Yahoo Group. Check out our Capitol Etiquette before you come!
